Citing budget constraints, Ravenna Township trustees have canceled this spring's cleanup.
Last year, the service cost taxpayers $38,000 and Trustee Pat Artz said this year the service was expected to cost more than $40,000.
"We just don't have the money," she said. "We knew we couldn't cut services like ambulance or fire service, so we had to cut somewhere. We felt the trash pick up was the first thing we had to cut."
The township recently made cutbacks to the zoning department and changes to the schedule at the fire department to save costs.
Township resident Tom Dean said he is disappointed there is no service this year, and worries people will simply litter the township roads with unwanted items.
"It's a service I'd like to see returned," he said. "It's helpful to me and keeps the community clean. If we don't have the service, people will simply litter more."
Dean said he is unsure what he'll do with the two couches he'd hoped to dispose of, and hopes to have the spring cleanup again once township funds become available.
"If the funds aren't there, its hard to spend the money," he said.
Artz said trustees are unsure if they will offer the cheaper, fall drop-off that costs the township about $17,000. She said trustees will decide later this summer.
Most of the residents have been understanding about the loss of the service, "when I tell them we're working with 1996 monies in 2008," Artz said.
"We're all in this together," she said. "Everybody's in bad shape. I know what people are going through because expenses are going up, and there's no money."

dear 5 of us yes it is the townships responsibility to provide us with services for the TAXES that we pay. They used to mow the ditches and every other township and city around us sprays for mosquitos and for your information I go out with a bucket and pick up trash along our road all of the time but it does not stop the dumping from the people who bring there trash and throw it on the side of the road because they don't pay for there trash service I beleive that if we pay taxes we should get some services in return if not then what the hell are we paying for????

Why would you think it is the townships responsibility to clean and mow your ditches? It's your ditch. And spray your own mosquitos!

People need to be responsible for their stuff. If you neighborhood has a bunch of trash, get the neighborhood together and clean it up.

Hey I know Lets start a Township Police dept.

remember that disaster? one huge drain on our resources - another example of duplication of services.

Regarding the failed fire levy issue-- The people have spoken.

Our officials should listen.

Rather than spending additional monies pounding that through until they get their way. Perhaps they should begin serious discussion with the City of Ravenna to consolidate services.
One house can always be run more effectively and efficiently than two.

In these times of economic stress it makes even more sense for both entities. We need untiy for survival - Not more divisions and lines of seperation. We have always been The Ravenna Community until a couple of giant egos clashed in yesteryear. Have we not learned anything?

I know many of the city and township officials because I have lived here all my life. They are all careing , intelligent public service minded individuals. Why do ya'all seem to dummy up when you get together?

We have the same old problems and we always will until we try to resolve them from fresh approaches.

We pray together , we play together , why on earth can we not get it together...

I think that we need to let them know that the biggest reason why there fire levy did not pass was you needed to have a calculator with you when you voted to try to figure out how much it was going to add to your tax bill it was too much money and the wording was misleading on purpose in order to try to make you think it wasn't that much. If I remember correctly it was worded .13 cents or something like that for every 100 dollars of value on your home they gave no example of how much it would be per year on a 100K home. As far as Spring Clean up they need to do it this township is a mess just look around the streets trash everywhere people have been dumping on our road. They don't do anything for the township except for salting the roads in the winter they don't clean our ditches or mow them, or spray for mosquitos in the summer I have had to do my own for years now. But I agree with the general opinion here it's so we will pass the Fire levy when they put it back on the ballot along with another general Fund Levy. I don't think that the trustees know what they are doing and they are mismanaging the taxpayers money.

Do you think if we dropped everything off at her house she'd even notice?

Wake up Pat Artz! 1996 money! We just passed a GENERAL FUND LEVY in 2006! We need to show up in force at the next Trustee meeting, Tuesday May 6 @ 7:00 pm the old ODOT buiding on Oakwood Street. And why are we paying rent for a Zoning office and a Trustee meeting room if we are having budget woes. I called the zoning office and the young lady told me that she got cut back to 12 hours a week! We pay rent for 12 hours a week? Time for the Trustees to resign or be recalled. I remember when we all cared enough to put the pressure on the point when needed. Hope to see you there!

I think everyone should load their junk up and drop it off at Trustee Pat Artz's house! The only problem is that you couldn't tell the difference between whats there now and what we would drop off.

Well what all of you are forgetting is, look at Ravenna! Drive around the city and the township, Hello!! This place has nothing every corner and block has a house for sale people! There are no jobs here the only people who get laid I mean paid are the big wigs in the orfices , offices that don't want to do nothing about nothing, has anyone ever gone to see how much all these people make really! I haven't because I know not where to go to find this information, but it would be nice to know wouldn't it? Has to be public record. How can someone perceive that Hey' let's put two dollars on the taxes or water bill etc. to compensate this. Are you ignarant, I mispelled it on purpose so don't get to thinking I do not know how to spell because I do. The city wants more money, the township wants more , well you know what " WE THE PEOPLE WANT MORE OUT OF OUR DAM GOVERNMENT AND THE MORONS THAT RUN IT " Do we get it? No we do not. There to busy giving themselves raises or spending the so called we need to fix this or that when all they really do is waste it instead of utilizing existing structures that are sound or cutting the pay. Come on people!! You have all heard this song and dance before, they say the need the monies for this and next thing you know there using it to buy a car, truck or something else that did not need bought. The fact is , Ravenna is a broke b, mountian in Ohio and there is nothing here but liars, deceivers who want to manipulate the tax payers. It's time to quit the stupidness and take back what is rightfully ours! The Constitution wasn't drawn for some back woods moron who couldn't spell simple, it was designed to protect US! Tell the township trustees to absorb the bill for the cleanup, we pay enough in taxes for them to all sit and do nothing.

This is just another STRONG ARM TACTIC by Pat Artz in order to get the residents to pass their second fire LEVY. I just don't understand how they can keep taking services away from residents after they just passed a general fund levy specifically for (the Paving of the Roads, Trash Pick-Up, The Constable, Zoning Offices, etc.) As specifically stated when they needed us to pass the GENERAL FUND LEVY. It sure did not stop them from ordering several new service vehicles this year and adding a second zoning inspector, after one was more than enough for three years or more. Maybe-- they are trying to hide or cover something else up? It sure doesn't make any sense to pass two Levies in the past year and a half then cut those same services that the levy was for. Vote 2 new in 2009

Well, work within the budget. If the job has to get done then get it done. Maybe we should put city and township workers on a salary instead of an hourly wage. This way they can be available when needed. And can take it easier during slow seasons. It's funny that they can sit at the coffee shop and McDonalds or just in the truck or we watch 3 of them doing the work of 1 or 2 just laughing it up wasting our time during the day but when it's time to get to work..."we can't afford it". This isn't just Ravenna TWP people. this is most and also county workers.
Why dont we put some of the people on welfare to work on some of the vehicles, or the ones in the county jail. No...as usual the taxpayers are expected to foot the bill.
