Local girls enjoy community serviceMay 15, 2008
Christian "Lizzie" Timms, left, and Mary Jensen work to pick up trash along the Cuyahoga River on Earth Day. The two girls enjoy community service. Their last collaboration was to sort ponytails for Wigs for Kids in Cleveland. Lizzie has completed dozens of hours of service this year that include volunteering at the Portage Animal Protective League in Ravenna and helping her cheering team, the American Elite, with a coat drive for Summit County battered women's shelter. Lizzie hopes to earn the President's Volunteer Service Award, gold level, sponsored by the United States government, which requires 100 hours of volunteer service within a year for youth younger than 18. Mary is working toward the same award at the bronze level, which requires 55 hours of community service. Comments
