There will be a program at Deerfield Cemetery at 2 p.m. Sunday connected to the events of the Portage County Bicentennial. There will be a little said in memory of Rachel Grant, who is buried in Deerfield Cemetery and was the grandmother of President Ulysses S. Grant. The chapel will be open for those who have not seen it. This program will be presented by the Deerfield Historical Society and Deerfield Cemetery Association. ------ Deerfield Township trash clean-up will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Take your things to the old township garage. Thanks, trustees, for doing this for us. ------ Deerfield La Leche League met recently at the Deerfield Town Hall for a covered dish dinner. The group is planning a trip to Hartville on July 10. The June meeting will be held at noon on June 12. All citizens over age 55 may attend. ------ Rita Simpkins was surprised by a visit from her daughter, Tamara of Geneva-on-the-Lake, for Mother's Day. They enjoyed a shopping trip and dinner out. ------ Ricky Martin had a very busy month of April while finishing his last semester at Walsh University. On April 6, he attended Honors Convocation for being on the dean's list last fall. Immediately following was the Servant Leadership Banquet, where he was presented the Gold Service Award for selfless service. Ricky also was nominated for the "Tower of Excellence Award." He made it to the top five finalists out of about 40 nominees. To qualify, you're nominated by staff, you must show leadership, campus and public service, Walsh commitment, integrity and extracurricular distinction, and must be a graduating senior. Both events were attended by his mother, Christy, and grandmother, Rita Simpkins. On April 20, Ricky was inducted into the National Residence Hall Honorary for having made outstanding contributions to the residence hall system at Walsh for three years. On April 26, Walsh held Baccalaureate Mass and awarded graduates with an academic hood appropriate to their degree and area of expertise. Christy attended this age-old ceremony. And finally, on April 27, graduation! At 1:30 p.m., a class of 438 graduated from Walsh University. Ricky graduated with a bachelor's degree in computer science with a minor in management information systems. He's been working the last semester and now full time in the Research and Development Department at Bridgestone Firestone in Akron. He's making his home in Green. His mom and grandma attended graduation along with Jessy, Darryl and Cora Cottrell. After graduation, everyone celebrated with a great dinner at the 356th Fighter Group in North Canton. ------ Oh, boy. I made a mistake again. The girls that put the flowers at the Deerfield United Methodist Church doors were not the 4-H-ers. They were the Girl Scouts.
