An open letter o the Waterloo School Board

April 20, 2008

To the esteemed elected members of the Waterloo School Board; I implore you to act appropriately in the capacities to which you were elected. You have a fiduciary responsibility to act in the best interest of the school district. To this end, the accountability of the Superintendent to the School Board is paramount. In my experience, there is a prevailing opinion that certain members of the School Board are stooges of the Superintendent. These individuals forsake the electorate by graciously approving requests of the Superintendent without reasonable public discussion, debate, or inquiry. This mentality contradicts the basic principals of open government and accountability. Should the School Board be reluctant to ask questions of the Superintendent in a public setting? Should the School Board cower from potential disagreements with the Superintendent? Should the School Board perpetuate their emasculation by failing to ask meaningful questions of the Superintendent before voting on his requests? Although peace and harmony are naturally appealing, they should not result in a weak-kneed School Board that makes every effort to avoid an inquisitive glance at the Superintendent in a public setting. To add to my concerns and further illustrate my point, it is my understanding that the Superintendent fails to return the phone calls of one particular School Board Member. Whether one agrees with this particular School Board Member is irrelevant when compared to the blatant disrespect exercised by the Superintendent in failing to return phone calls for weeks at a time. Apparently, the Superintendent of the Waterloo School District has a distorted perception of the employer-employee relationship. To refresh his memory, the Waterloo School Board is the employer and he is the employee. The Superintendent is subservient to the School Board and is accountable to the School Boards oversight. By failing to return the calls of a School Board Member, the Superintendent demonstrates inexcusable disrespect for the institution and authority of the Waterloo School Board. Although the Superintendent may be doing a good job in his duties, he must be reminded that he serves the Waterloo School Board, who in turn serve the Atwater/Randolph voters.
